Location

Anogi is a small village located on the north- eastern part of Ithaca. The village is well-known for its rocky surroundings. Rocks of all shapes and sizes form the landscape. A local tale tells the story of how God, after having molded the mountains of Ithaca, put all the remaining rocks and stones through a sieve and scattered what was left over Anogi. A walk around the village is a worthwhile experience, especially when it comes to observing Anogi’s celebrated MENIRs –namely the oddly shaped huge monoliths, the most famous of which is Araclis.

Furthermore, due to its mountainous location, Anogi became the island’s first capital during the Pirates’ Era. Sightseeing around the old city can be very rewarding. The most ancient church existing in the Ionian Islands is situated in the village of Anogi. It dates as far back as the Twelfth century and is decorated with rare holy icons.

The Katharon monastery is situated at a distance of approximately 2 kilometers from Anogi.
